3 Ways Your Logo Needs to Work For You

Have you ever noticed that a business has several different versions of the same logo? This is no accident! As a designer who has created many a logo (and critiqued even more), I have some experience with understanding the various ways a logo needs to work for a business. It needs to be designed in various shapes & sizes, with a few overarching elements that carry through to each version to remain recognizable.

These days, it’s important to make sure that your logo can work across multiple mediums, and can work for you in the ways that it should. Below, find three ways your logo needs to work for YOU!

BUSINESS CARDS // Believe it or not, cards are still a very effective way to promote your brand. Your logo needs to be available in both horizontal and square/round format, fully readable, to work effectively on a business card. When I design a card, I like to put the monogram format on the reverse, along with any pertinent contact information, and save the full version of the logo for the front of the card.

SYMBOL & FAVICON // Also known as a monogram version, this version is crucial for watermarks, website favicons, social media profiles, and any other places you need to establish your brand without using your whole logo. Still recognizable and still lovely! This version needs to include just enough information so your clients will still know that it’s you. I like to include a little element from the main logo, and work the typography a bit to create a symbol.


WEBSITE
// The most effective website logos are horizontal, and must be clear and easily readable. This way the logo can stack at the top of your website's homepage neatly, establishing your brand without distracting from the rest of your important content, and also translates well to any mobile device.
